Vitamin B8

You may see vitamin B-8 on the labels of supplements, but the real name of this substance is inositol. Since inositol exists in several forms, you may also encounter names such as myo-inositol and inositol hexaphosphate, or IP6. It’s also found in plants in the form of phytic acid. Inositol contributes to the normal functioning of cells throughout your body and shows promise for treating cancer, certain psychological disorders and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Overview of Inositol
Inositol is a form of glucose that helps your liver process fat and keeps muscles and nerves working. It also affects neurotransmitters, which are chemicals that transmit nerve impulses. As part of the membrane that encloses every cell, inositol influences cellular performance. In the form of inositol hexaphosphate, it works as a messenger between cells, triggering specific functions to occur. Your body produces inositol, but you also get it from eating beans, nuts, whole grains, cantaloupe and citrus fruits.

Why your body needs Vitamin B8

The main function of Vitamin B8 is in the storage and metabolism of amino acids.  Vitamin B8 is also a key component of the citric acid cycle which is the main series of chemical reactions that results in food being turned into energy within the body.  Vitamin B8 is also used in the immune system and in the production of hair and nails.

Vitamin B8 Functions & Benefits
It has been observed that a deficiency of this nutrient may affect ATP synthesis, and RNA synthesis.
There is increased interest in demonstrating the relationship between Vitamin B8 and its stress-relieving effects. Stress is widely defined as including numerous potential sources, from mental-psychological stressors, to physical and emotional stress. One study in particular states clear benefits of the nutrient against conditions that include panic attacks and agoraphobia (the fear of crowds). Patients suffering from anxiety appear to have benefited from intake of Inositol, as one study reveals. Also, Inositol was proven by one study to be at least as effective as fluvoxamine in treating symptoms of depression for a significant number of patients, without the unpleasant side effects associated to fluvoxamine.
There is further evidence and many years of clinical settings that testify to certain benefits of Inositol in treating the following disorders: OCD (obsessive Compulsive Disorder), Bipolar Disorder, moderate and mild depression, senile dementia, panic attacks, and anxiety.

Studies show lots of benefits in diabetic neuropathy (a condition experienced by people with diabetes, where severe pain and numbness of the peripheral members is felt) or peripheral injury of any kind.
Other benefits for which the nutrient is undergoing research include promotion of healthy hair and nails, prevention of premature graying, enhancement and ensuring support for the immune system function, and involvement in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

Cancer Prevention and Treatment
In laboratory studies, inositol shows potential for stopping the growth of cancer cells. In December 2013, the “International Journal of Molecular Sciences” reported that inositol hexaphosphate from rice bran killed colorectal cancer cells. An earlier laboratory study also found that phytic acid from rice bran inhibited the growth of cancer cells, according to the December 2011 issue of the “Malaysian Journal of Nutrition.” One study involving humans was published in the February 2010 issue of the “Journal of Experimental and Clinical Cancer Research.” The researchers found that a combination of inositol and inositol hexaphosphate helped relieve side effects experienced by women receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer. The nutrient has also been touted for benefits against colon cancer, particularly referring to Inositol hexaphosphate, or Phytic acid. The conclusion needs confirmation from large scale human studies, however there seems to be a certain connection between high fiber diets (which are rich in Inositol) and decrease colon cancer risk.

Potential to Treat Psychological Disorders
Inositol affects the amount of serotonin available to nerves in your brain. Since serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, researchers have studied inositol’s potential to treat psychological disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder and panic disorder. Studies have produced mixed results, with inositol sometimes relieving symptoms and other times showing no impact, according to New York University. A review in the January 2014 issue of "Human Psychopharmacology" found that inositol did not significantly improve symptoms for depressive, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders. However, it showed superior effectiveness for depression associated with premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Relieve Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, is a hormonal imbalance in women characterized by increased production of male hormones. Women with PCOS experience weight gain, irregular menstrual cycles, infertility and cysts in their ovaries. Many women also have high levels of insulin in their blood. Several studies show inositol my help by increasing ovulation frequency and supporting weight loss, reports New York University. A study published in the May 2012 issue of the “European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences” recommended using a combination of myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol as the first line of treatment for overweight women with PCOS.

Effective in weight loss
At the cellular level, B8 assists in efficient breakdown of fats and transport lipids from the cells. This in turn activates the body metabolism, leading to weight loss. Inositol also improves the levels of good HDL cholesterol, which channels smoother flow of blood through arteries.
Controls hypertension
B8 keeps blood pressure in check, because of effective blood flow via arteries. The contribution to mood management also tackles the causes of hypertension in the individuals.

Improves cognitive function
Because of the massive contribution to better working of neurotransmitters, inositol proves helpful in improving cognitive function. There have been reports of better thought process and active lifestyle after the intake. This effect is partly due to the fact that Vitamin B8 has mood enhancing properties.

Caution
A deficiency in vitamin B8 is uncommon, while toxicity is highly unlikely. However, given that Inositol is largely diminished by caffeine consumption, caution is advised for heavy coffee drinkers. Inositol is called a conditional vitamin, because as the body is exposed to increased levels of stress, the bodily needs for the nutrient increase. Attention should hence be given to providing your body with sufficient amounts of this nutrient in such cases of stress.

There is no recommended daily dose in case of this nutrient as daily requirements have not been established so far. Commonly, supplements contain a 500 mg dose of Inositol, in combination with other nutrients, including other B vitamins. It is estimated that the average American consumes the equivalent of 1 g of Inositol per day.
Adults experiencing extremely stressful periods characterized by episodes of depression or anxiety are particularly recommended to start taking a supplement. However, given that the nature of these conditions (in terms of causality and treatment) is highly complex, we do not recommend that you use a dietary supplement without a healthcare provider’s advice in advance. In addition, people who regularly exceed 2 cups of coffee per day should also consider supplementing the daily intake as depletion of Inositol is done at a much faster pace.
Potential side effects of Inositol are unusual and usually manifest as various gastro-intestinal discomfort symptoms. The nutrient is suitable for children, however pregnant and breastfeeding women are not advised to supplement their diets with this nutrient.
